FITNESS FIRST

You can’t turn on the television or surf the internet without running across the latest and greatest weight loss or exercise fad or invention. But, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is like most everything in life – it takes had work.

Your weight has profound impact on your overall health and should be a topic of conversation between you and your doctor. Keep the following important facts in mind:

  • Being overweight increases your death rate from heart disease, diabetes, some cancers and many other illnesses. You are obese if your waist circumference is greater than 35 inches (women) and greater than 40 inches (men).
  • To lose weight you must exercise more and modify your eating behavior. Slow, steady weight loss of 2 pounds per week is healthier than rapid weight loss.
  • Exercise at least 3 times per week for at least 30 minutes. One of the best forms of exercise is walking. You just have to consistently walk. More strenuous exercise is even more helpful. If you are over 40, you may want to talk to the doctor prior to beginning an exercise program.

For some these guidelines seem logical and are easy to follow. For others there may be environmental or other health factors influencing their ability to take control of their weight. Have a conversation with your doctor about the best plan for your health concerning your weight.
